A New Unfiltered Trump Social Platform Where Lies Will Know No Boundaries

Former President Donald Trump, infamous for lying tens of thousands of times during his presidency and now facing a subpoena in New York for possibly lying on his financial forms and tax returns, launches now a new ironically named social media app, Truth Social. The premise is the same he has asserted since 2016, namely that the mainstream news media are untrustworthy and that they, not Trump, are the liars.

The launch of the application this week was a failure. Many people who signed up to become “truths” kept getting error messages or being told they were on a waiting list.

These things happen with any new social media launch, but it’s consistent with Trump’s other big businesses that promised big results but failed to deliver: luxury hotels that turn out to be cheaply furnished and overpriced, an airline that went bankrupt and a for-profit university that fell so far short of delivering on its promises that Trump ended up having to pay defrauded students $25 million.

Prosecutors say he overvalued his properties to trick banks into lending him money, then undervalued those properties to minimize his taxes.

The words truth and Trump just don’t go together on any platform, social media or otherwise.

The chances of Truth Social replacing social media giants like Twitter and Facebook are questionable at best.

The reason Trump started the app is because Facebook and Twitter banned it for inciting violence during the January 6, 2021 Capitol uprising — a violent attack prompted by Trump’s “big lie” that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him.

Another worrying sign is the fine print in Truth Social’s user agreement.

Despite the promoters’ claims that the site will be an open forum for people to express themselves without censorship, the user agreement states that people who post to the site may not “disparage, tarnish, or otherwise harm, our opinion, to us and/or the Placers.”

Freedom of speech, in other words, as long as it doesn’t criticize the Great Leader.

It’s the same spirit that guides dictatorships in Russia, China, Egypt and Cuba, and it fits the pattern that Trump has established by backing some Republican candidates and attacking others.

Criticizing him or daring to hold him accountable is a surefire way to get kicked out of the Republican Party, as Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger can attest.

Truth Social is led by former Republican Representative Devin Nunes of California, a Trump sycophant.

Now Trump and his fans will be free to say whatever they want, unfiltered and unhindered by major social media companies that insist on nitty-gritty rules about users not using their accounts to violently subvert democracies.

Supporters who have been driven to launch an insurrection, plot to kidnap the governor of Michigan, and sabotage national efforts to contain the pandemic will now have a new, unfiltered platform to plan future acts of madness.
