Civic League, I&M partner on the “Meet the Committees” online forum on Saturday

(February 7, 2022) The Nantucket Civic League will launch a new civic engagement initiative – “Meet the Committees” – via Zoom on Saturday, February 12.

“Meet the Committees” aims to encourage broader and more diverse participation in municipal activities in the city. The Civic League partners with other community organizations, including The Investigator and the Mirror, do this.

The new annual public forum will serve to familiarize Nantucket residents with the wide range of services available opportunities to serve member of a committee, commission or municipal council. The first “Meet the Committees” will be held virtually from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, February 12 via Zoom. For more details, visit the Civic League website www.nantucketcivicleague.com.

Seven Nantucket office holders (past and present) shared on video their personal experiences serving in elected or appointed office. They reflect on the opportunities to serve and the vastly different time commitments involved, how one applies for a committee appointment or files nomination papers to run for elected office, and the rewards of volunteering to help make city affairs.

Civic League co-chair Peter Morrison and NCTV18 staff produced concise seven-minute YouTube videos to deliver those personal thoughts. By the end of February, these video resources will be available to everyone through the Civic League YouTube channel (hosted by NCTV18) and on The Investigator and the Mirror website.

The Civic League intends to collaborate with The Investigator and the Mirror to promote these initial instructional videos (and others to be produced) widely in Nantucket’s various home country communities. He also intends to engage with leaders of organizations that represent the interests of diverse communities on the island, to help broaden participation.

The new forum complements the Civic League’s two signature annual forums: “Meet the Articles” on April 9 and “Meet the Candidates” on April 30.
